Abstract

Dance Well supports the professional development of dance artists and dance organisations who, through dance, aim to engage and be accessible to individuals with Parkinson’s disease or other movement disorders.

The project brings together 9 partners and around 40 dance artists from 5 countries. It seeks to bring across Europe the practice of Dance Well – a practice which promotes dance in museum spaces and artistic contexts, and which is applied primarily, but not exclusively, to individuals living with Parkinson’s disease.

Goals

The main objectives of the European project are:

  • to develop and experiment with innovative dance practices
  • to implement, transfer, and disseminate knowledge and experience across European regions to support dance artists and organisations who work with those affected by Parkinson’s disease, and other mobility problems, in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis
  • to contribute to the well-being of individuals and to social cohesion,
  • as well as to developing the culture of dance and its impact on civil society.

Our role

Fitzcarraldo Foundation is a research partner in the Dance Well project, together with the Centro aiku – art enterprise culture at the Fondazione Università Ca’ Foscari.

Fitzcarraldo is managing the action research activity for the whole duration of the project, as well as the monitoring and evaluation of general impacts, through an approach that combines quantitative, qualitative and partly ethnographic data and methodologies. The research particularly investigates:

  • Outcomes for dance artists and dance organisations, particularly in terms of upskilling and the development of new aesthetics, that may change the perceptions of people involved in creating, practising and developing creative processes.;
  • Outcomes for participants – with or without Parkinson’s disease – in Dance Well classes, particularly in terms of developing and supporting well-being, both individual and social. The aim here is to try to measure well-being using classifications and metrics that are both representative of and co-constructed by participants;
  • What the conditions are that enable well-being, that can be gathered together and systematised, for use in the guidelines and recommendations for disseminating the project.
