International Conference
supported and organized by: Regione Piemonte - Direzione generale Beni Culturali/Settore Musei e Patrimonio culturale, Fondazione Fitzcarraldo, HoldenArt, ENCATC.
Turin, 4th - 5th february 2005
On 4th and 5th February 2005 the International Conference "Story telling in museum contexts: innovative pedagogies to enhance personnel competence" took place in Turin. The initiative was organized by Regione Piemonte - Direzione Beni Culturali, Fondazione Fitzcarraldo, HoldenArt and ENCATC and supported by the European Commission - Directorate General for Education and Culture within the framework of the Leonardo da Vinci Programme.
Many participants outlined the importance of this conference, which was experienced as a true occasion for meeting and transversal exchange among museum operators, academics, researchers, private actors and students who had the real chance to effectively interact on contents and techniques.
The international approach of the conference was underlined by the different origin of the participants: 149 operators coming from 27 European countries took part in all the sessions; strong and creative was the presence from Eastern Europe as well.

The graph outlines the percentage of participants coming form Eastern and Western European countries including those who could attend the Conference with scholarships. Further 111 operators from Italy attended the sole plenary sessions, for a total of 260 participants.
'Story telling' is a technique aiming at presenting and conveying meaning as well as values of cultural goods, sites and events by creating and telling 'stories' related to them. It is increasingly applied in Italy and widely practiced in English speaking countries by guides interpreting their tours, or in live performances and 'living history'.
The communication of contents associated with the cultural heritage was the umbrella theme of this conference: what should be communicated and how is the main issue that very different theories and visions are nationally and internationally tackling. Interpretation, education, reintegration are some of the keywords on this subject. The attention was particularly focused on the professional skills that such tasks imply and on training and recruitment of the operators using such various and somehow innovative methodologies or tools.
